Different stages of lifting you must know

  • Preparation
  • Lifting
  • Carrying
  • Setting Down

Preparation includes planning out your lift before lifting or carrying heavy loads. Common planning which includes where I am going with the load is the path properly clear of obstructions, should I use mechanical help or should another person help me with the load while lifting or is it possible to break the load into smaller parts for easy lifting.

Lifting techniques should be properly performed in order to avoid injuries. You should always get a good handhold over the objects and do not twist or jerk while lifting. When lifting loads get as close to the load as possible and keep your back straight, and hold the load close and centered in front of you. Find someone to help you with the lift if the load is too heavy. Always try to keep your arms and elbows close to your body while lifting.

Carrying the load is vital while lifting. We should have a proper hold over the weight while lifting. Do not twist or turn the body while carrying instead move your feet to turn. While carrying if you feel fatigued, set the load down, and take rest. Do not let yourself tired while lifting so that you cannot perform proper setting down of the load.

Proper Setting Down should be performed in order to keep the carried load safely at the desired location. Keep the load down in the same way you picked it up. Always keep the load close to the body as possible. Wait until the load is secure enough to release your handhold.

It is easier and safer to push rather than to pull. It is better to minimize the reaching of the weights. While lifting a common rule used is bend at the knees, not the hips. When not in control always ensure a helping hand and immediately call for it.

Use proper Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves, steel-toed safety boots while carrying loads. Always make sure that the lifting pathway is clear and check for any wet or slick surfaces and make sure that the work area is flat and dry.
